Healthy Summertime Eating While Traveling

Summertime means travel and vacations for many of us. Enjoy delicious cuisine while still maintaining a healthy eating routine. It’s definitely achievable with a bit of planning and mindfulness.

Here are some tips for enjoying summer travel while still prioritizing your health:

Pack Healthy Snacks. Bring along portable, nutritious snacks like nuts, seeds, dried fruits, whole grain crackers, or homemade trail mix to keep hunger at bay between meals.

Choose Accommodations with Kitchen Facilities. If possible, opt for accommodations with kitchen facilities so you can prepare some of your own meals. This gives you more control over what you’re eating and allows you to incorporate fresh ingredients into your meals.

Research Local Cuisine. Before your trip, research the local cuisine of your destination. Look for healthy options that are popular in the area and make a list of restaurants or markets you want to visit.

Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you’re traveling to hot climates. Carry a refillable stainless steel or glass water bottle with you and aim to drink at least eight 8-oz glasses of water a day.

Balance Your Meals. Aim for balanced meals that include a plant-forward combination of lean protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Look for dishes that incorporate these elements when dining out.

Be Mindful of Portion Sizes. It’s easy to overeat while on vacation, especially when foods are so delicious. Pay attention to portion sizes and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

Include Physical Activity. Incorporate physical activity into your travel itinerary to aid digestion and help offset any indulgences. Whether it’s going for a hike, swimming, biking, or simply exploring your destination on foot, staying active can help you feel your best.

Limit Alcohol and Sugary Beverages. Enjoy alcoholic beverages and sugary drinks in moderation, as they contribute to excess calorie intake. Opt for water, herbal tea, or sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice as healthier alternatives.

Practice Moderation, Not Deprivation. Allow yourself to indulge in moderation and enjoy the local cuisine without feeling guilty. The key is balance and mindfulness.

Listen to Your Body. Pay attention to how different foods make you feel. If something doesn’t agree with you or leaves you feeling sluggish, make note of it and adjust your choices accordingly.

Bon appétit and safe travels!
