Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but it does come with its own set of challenges when it comes to preventing falls, especially as we age.
By preparing and taking precautions, you can help reduce the risk of falls and enjoy autumn safely.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe and steady:
For Outdoor Safety:
Clear Walkways: Regularly rake leaves and remove other debris from walkways and driveways. Wet leaves can be slippery.
Maintain Good Lighting: Ensure your outdoor pathways are well-lit. Use outdoor lights or add motion-sensor lights to illuminate dark areas.
Check for Ice: As temperatures drop, watch for patches of ice, especially in shaded areas. Use salt or sand to improve traction.
For Indoor Safety:
Remove Clutter: Keep floors clear of clutter like books, shoes, and cords to avoid tripping hazards.
Secure Rugs: Use non-slip backing on area rugs to prevent them from shifting or bunching up.
Ensure Adequate Lighting: Make sure all areas of your home, especially stairs and hallways, are well-lit. Consider adding night lights to guide your way during the night.
For Personal Safety:
Wear Proper Footwear: Choose shoes with non-slip soles and avoid wearing high heels or slippery-soled shoes.
Exercise Regularly: Engage in exercises that improve balance, strength, and flexibility. Activities like tai chi or yoga can be particularly beneficial.
Use Assistive Devices: If you use a cane or walker, make sure it’s in good condition and adjust it properly for your height.
For Home Modifications:
Install Handrails: Ensure there are handrails on both sides of stairways and in bathrooms if needed.
Use Grab Bars: Install grab bars in the bathroom near the toilet and in the shower or tub.
Adjust Furniture Arrangement: Arrange furniture to create clear, unobstructed walking paths through your home.
